Every holiday season, we love to shine a spotlight on Madeira, Matt’s favorite beverage and a primordial wine of the past. This year, we’ve got something really special—four wines produced over a century ago and kept in cask until they were bottled last year.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to taste legendary Madeira from the 1895-1905 vintages. When we had the opportunity to buy these wines directly from the producer’s stores in Madeira earlier this year, we jumped at the chance. Wines like these will likely never see the light of day again.
To mark the occasion, we’re channeling S. Weir Mitchell’s short story A Madeira Party, also published way back in 1895. “There is but one wine,” says one of his partygoers. “And his name is Madeira, of course!”

Chill with Martin Reyes MW of Winewise this Thursday, December 7 at Compline Wine Shop. He’s bringing big bottles of grower Champagne and some vintage selections to make us feel festive. We’re spinning warm soul and jazz and getting all fuzzy inside.
Ticket price covers the tasting of six Champagne selections, and you’ll have the opportunity to stock up on MAGS and JEROS of great bubbly on the way out.
